Environmental Olympics

On the 13^th of October, at 4:00 pm, the first of what is hoped to become an annual Olympic event between Environmental Engineering and Environmental Technology teams took place in front of Labra which is located on the east side of Mikkeli University of Applied Science. The four event hosts, Maiju Valkeinen, Katja Seppä, Noora Pesonen, and Petra Kivistö explained the rules to the five teams after which the first Olympic games started. Teams competed in five different competitions. The first competition, called elephant football, involved two opposing teams playing regular football with the exception of a large exercise ball which was replacing a regular football. After that the loosing team would move to the next challenge which involved throwing Pétanque balls into distant circles in order to score points. The next challenge was javelin throwing followed by a gymnastic performance that each team was told to plan and preform in front of Petra Kivistö who was the judge for this particular event. The finale challenge consisted two parts. The first part involved running around a track during which a puzzle piece was laid on a board. The second part required the finale runner to compile the puzzle before finishing the race.The teams competed and after the Olympic games were completed by every team the hosts tallied up the scores while the competitors ate and drank. Maiju Valkeinen revealed the winners after which all competitors return home happy of being able to participate even though they were not all in the winning team. All in all the event was a success, and as Maiju Valkeinen says, “We hope this will become an annual event.”
